Shouldn't apple be giving away iPads for free!!!!!!!!!!
I never won an iPad before. It just happened that I won an ipad3 for free. I may be wrong what I am saying here, but after using it for a week now, I am less than impressed with this toy. I won a small 12 inch laptop and that costed about 300 USD. I am not sure how much an iPad costs. But let me do a quick comparison between the two.
Laptop(small): portability - very good, battery life very good, has all laptop like qualities.
Ipad3: portability - very good, browser - needs some practice to get used to, battery life very good.
Laptop: can you use for work - yes, very much so. Can also do remote login, listen to music, videos, print documents.
iPad: severely limited when it comes to real time working. Did not figure out how to open and save a document, print it. You can watch videos but the sound is very faint. If you need anything, you have to go to iTunes to buy it, no free download I guess.
Laptop: key boards are normal, with mouse overs, arrow keys, right clicks and many more
iPad: I am yet to find a mouse over with iPad and arrow keys are non-existent. Only way to delete a character is to move cursor over and use back space. I don't think I like it.
Laptop: games - you can certainly play games and even download many more.
iPad: suppose to be good there, but yesterday when I saw a chess icon(my favorite game), I clicked on the game menu, that took me a while to register and not to mention the nicknames already taken warning messages. When I finally got there got hugely disappointed because there was no chess!!!! It however, prompted to buy games from iTunes.
Laptop: what about songs? Well you can play music with ease with your laptop.
iPad: takes you quickly to iTunes for music purchase. 99 cents per song. So if you had a collection of 5000 songs it would cost you a hooping $5000.
Laptop: photographs and video recording - can be done very easily.
iPad: you can distort images plus you can do what a laptop does.
So now the question is if I were to pay for everything to iTunes, that I would otherwise get for free via open source and I am not having any extra benefits such as great browsing, video, battery time experience, why should I be buying this product in the first place? When apple can m ale so much money through iTunes by forcing people to buy through iPod, iPad, should they not give the medium( e.g; iPod and iPad) for free?
Ironically, I am typing this rant from my new iPad. If there are any typos, then the credit should certainly go to this toy, because I have hard time in finding a spell checker. Also, the fonts are so tiny, that I can barely make out what I am typing. So people, unless you are given an iPad for free, I see absolutely no merit in buying one. It may be best for very small kids who would like to distort images than for any adult use!!!!!!!!!!!!

Follow up on my iPAD winning streak
Here you go, today around 2.00 PM my time the door bell rang and received a Fedex package from Genetic Engineering and biotechnology News. A letter that read
"Dear Sucheta,
As I mentioned during our phone call, GEN is delighted that we have chosen you as the winner of our "Why I Read GEN" contest. The GEN editorial team concluded that your explanation was the best out of all the hundreds of responses that we received. We sincerely appreciate your kind statements the we "provide the most up-to-date and crisp information on the latest science and technology news." We specially like the phrase that GEN was a "Scientific gateway for me."
Enclosed please find your prize -- a new iPAD3! We know you will find it immensely useful in your work at Virginia Tech.
Congratulations again!!
Sincerely
John Sterling, Editor in chief

Wow can't believe that it actually happened!!!!!!!!

Today is one of the greatest days....
Although I train my mind into believing that there is no good or bad day, it is just our perspective that makes it feel good or bad. However, I can't help but think that today is one of the greatest days for me. Ask why? Since I work from home, every morning before starting my work, I scribble a set of viable points that I want to complete on that day. Most of the time, my goals are too ambitious, so I end up not even achieving half of it. Today as usual, I started writing few points realistically and was going to start my work, when got a call from the GEN magazine saying that I won a ipad for writing the best caption on why I read GEN magazine. I did not believe them immediately that is another thing, but when the feeling started sinking in, it felt better and better. I always wanted to win an ipad somehow. That is not all, I not only managed to complete all that I jotted down, but went little bit ahead of that. One of my papers was rejected and I appealed against the decision. It so happened that the editor decided to give me another chance. I sat and wrote responses to the critique no-3 who was the most fierce of all. This task was out my list for today. During lunch time, I managed to plug out several dried plants that were scheduled for removal for a long time now. At 5.55 PM went for a body pump class and completed all that I was unable to do earlier. Next came the Yoga class at 7 PM and back home at 8 PM. So, today is such a day that gives me a sense of fulfillment. I managed to do a number of things and few extra. The icing on this all is winning 2 successive chess games against computer without forcing it to go back. After all work is all life is about...

Did I just win an iPAD!!!!!!!!
I was in a chat meeting with some of my peers at UPENN when the phone rang. Someone was enquiring if I was Sucheta and working at Virginia Tech. I said yes. Then he had this genuine doubt about why I am in Texas. I replied with my usual valor that I telecommute(in my mind I was like why you ask and waste my time). Then the person at the other end said, you are winner of the "Why I read Gen" contest and will receive an ipad2. In my mind, I was like yeah you are right... We receive so many such meaningless emails and calls which are nothing but traps. In any case, I sounded least enthusiastic with the news and meekly asked the person online - is there any strings attached? And he said none...
I came back and started continuing what I was doing. Then got an email from editor in chief of GEN magazine (www.genengnews.com) that said that they just got off phone with me and had a feeling that I showed no enthusiasm what so ever after hearing the "great" news. They had this contest last year on why I read the magazine and I said something like "GEN provides the most up-to-date and crisp information on latest science and technology. Often this has links to great papers, that I otherwise would overlook. On whole, it is a great source of scientific gateway for me!". Not only that there was another email that confirmed me as the winner and other details of me on a google spread sheet. I am now starting to believe that really won an ipad! I will update this blog once I really receive one...

God Bless!
You open a face book page and see someone is sharing a good news followed by a stream of comments having a common message "God Bless" in the end. I was beginning to wonder where that is coming from? I see a pattern there. Almost everyone who is god loving (read god fearing) writes this message. I am not sure how many of us really love god. Can you love someone without seeing? Are we as humans that appreciative that we tend to love someone who we believe to be the creator of this universe? Nah it is hard to believe. We at some corner of our hearts are afraid that if we don't pretend to love god then god will be mad at us and bad things will happen to us. How silly!! Whom we call the superpower and omnipresent/omnipotent, is so childish that if you don't pretend to love him will curse you? If by nature we are so appreciative, then we would appreciate each and everything that is happening around us and each and every individual that touches our lives in some ways. But we are not. We are very critical of people, situations at the same time we pretend to love god. This I feel is the height of hypocrasy we should try and come out of it.
Then the next thing is why do we say "God Bless". Are we ordering god to bless that person of choice or we are thinking that person needs extra blessing from god? Well, I don't know or think many people give a thought while putting this two letter monologue into their conversations. The Atheists are materially more successful people around if you make a survey. Sure you need a sense of god when you feel helpless or need strength. But I think the people who take responsibilities of their own actions are more confident and stronger people and emerge successful. On the other hand the people who are god loving (god fearing), most often look at god for help in many petty things. When good happens surprisingly they don't think it was god who did it for them, rather they think it is them who did it themselves. I think deep down somewhere is exonerates such people from taking the responsibilities of their own actions. So, it is about time we revise our feelings towards god and say what we really mean not something because everybody says....
