I was in a chat meeting with some of my peers at UPENN when the phone rang. Someone was enquiring if I was Sucheta and working at Virginia Tech. I said yes. Then he had this genuine doubt about why I am in Texas. I replied with my usual valor that I telecommute(in my mind I was like why you ask and waste my time). Then the person at the other end said, you are winner of the "Why I read Gen" contest and will receive an ipad2. In my mind, I was like yeah you are right... We receive so many such meaningless emails and calls which are nothing but traps. In any case, I sounded least enthusiastic with the news and meekly asked the person online - is there any strings attached? And he said none...
I came back and started continuing what I was doing. Then got an email from editor in chief of GEN magazine (www.genengnews.com) that said that they just got off phone with me and had a feeling that I showed no enthusiasm what so ever after hearing the "great" news. They had this contest last year on why I read the magazine and I said something like "GEN provides the most up-to-date and crisp information on latest science and technology. Often this has links to great papers, that I otherwise would overlook. On whole, it is a great source of scientific gateway for me!". Not only that there was another email that confirmed me as the winner and other details of me on a google spread sheet. I am now starting to believe that really won an ipad! I will update this blog once I really receive one...
